Role of GIS in preservation of Chiva and Chaitya


European Digital Week (https://europeandigitalweek.com/) is the biggest event in Europe digital technology wise. It includes 24 conferences in the main program and 2 conferences, 5 forums and 1 round table in the additional program. This year it will in virtual format. It is going to be held from Sept 21 to Sept 26, 2020. There is scheduled to be participants from 78 countries.

Chiva Chaitya Organization is working for the promotion and protection Chivas and Chaityas of Kathmandu Valley. With this goal, the organization has set  specific targets in documentation, promotion and restoration of these unique heritage of Nepal. 

There are estimated to be 2000 to 2500 Chiva in the Kathmandu Valley. We are trying to put location of all the Chiva in the map. This will help to locate each and individual Chiva in the map. For this purpose usage of digital technology is a must, otherwise it will not be able to manage such a large amount of location. We believe the work will help in promotion and preservation of age old heritage for future generations.



Our colleague Ashish Manandhar will be presenting our work in this initiative. He will be one of the speakers at the EuropeanDigitlWeek2020 Conference. He will be explaining how GIS(Geographic Information System) information is extracted and projected in the map and such individual Chiva locations are shown.

Chiva Nyas Puja Done at Dhokatole

Chiva Puja is a process which let us remind ourselves  that Chiva itself is not just a mere monument but a living shrine and carries lots of philosophical and spiritual values of Buddhist teachings. Chiva at Dhokatole, Ward 19, Kathmandu needed maintenance due to theft and wear and tear. Chiva Chaitya Organization took the initiative and with the help of community, ward restored the Chiva in 2021. Now a Chiva Puja is done to mark the completion of the restoration as well as to revive the intangible heritage in the form of elaborate puja to make the Chiva a living heritage. Establishing a Chiva passes through different phases namely 1) consecration of the ground upon which the Chaitya is to be erected. There Sūtrap ātana, where a thread makes a Maṇḍala with positions of total 121 deities 2) Pādasthāpana (laying of foundation) is done with specific rules using bricks, hollow spaces etc. 3) then bricklayers lay the foundation.
