Chiva Chaitya Competition Result announced
Chiva Chaitya Organization is pleased to publish result of the competition 'Why we need to protect heritage like Chiva Chaitya?' held in June 2020. Although there was plan to distribute certificates and prizes in a program, due to continued COVID situation, gatherings are not possible. So the result is published via website online.
चिभा चैत्य संस्था द्वारा केहि समय अगाडि संचालन गरेको 'चिभा चैत्य जस्ता सम्पदा किन संरक्षण गर्नु पर्छ?' भन्ने प्रतियोगिताको नतिजा प्रकासित भएको छ। समारोह गरि नतिजा प्रकाशन तथा पुरस्कार तथा सर्टिफिकेट बितरण गर्ने योजना भएकोमा हालको महामारिले गर्दा त्यो अबस्था नरहेको ले वेभसाईतबाट नै नतिजा प्रकासित गरिएको छ।

Cultural Heritages like Chiva Chaitya are identity of Nepalese Culture and
holds great significance. Chiva Chaityas marks the history of our ancestor's
beliefs and prayers that are passed on to generation and generation, teaching
its significance, value of beliefs and prayers, as well as the importance of
its preservation. The preservation of Chiva Chaitya(also called living
heritage) will always reflect the tradition and spiritual belief of indigenous
Newas of Kathmandu Valley. Also, being part of rich cultural heritage of
Kathmandu and even Nepal, Chiva Chaityas can be major attraction for tourist to
enjoy its beautiful creation and unique features. Cultural Heritages has always
been an important and huge part of identification of Kathmandu and Nepal for
the world. Hence, the maintenance and preservation of heritage like Chiva
Chaitya will always remind us about our Ancestry along with the importance
of traditions, cultures, values; not to forget we will be giving the world a
taste of our history and spiritual beliefs.

Heritages like Chiva and Chaitya are our identity. These heritages beautify our present and reflect our glorious past. They display our unique culture. These heritages not only show the religious importance but also exhibit the astonishing architectural design engraved flawlessly on those stones and woods. And from tourism point of view, they signify as a source of income. They are the gifts of our forefathers to us which we should protect as our responsibility and hand over to our future generations.

Kathmandu valley has always been a home to countless sacred sites and well
defined and legitimate form of Buddhism practiced by the Newar people. Chaityas
were and have been carried on to be built in the memory of a deceased family
member for the accumulation of merit by the departed , by members of surviving
generations, and by all living creatures.
Instead of being limited to private devotion as funerary monuments, chaityas
instead became the focus of public worship for members of the community, as
almost all of them are in public or semi-public spaces and due to a lack of
monastic tradition.
Chaityas appear in a various range of scales, from the monumental, like the
mahachaitya, or “great chaitya” of Swayambhunath, down to less than the height
of a person. The oldest of them were erected in the Licchavi period, named
after the ancient kingdom that ruled the Kathmandu Valley between the fifth and
eighth centuries, while a revival of the construction of chaityas took place in
the seventeenth century.
Buddhism is considered to be the world's fourth-largest religion with over 520
million followers which is over 7% of the global population . Scholars around
the world generally agree that Siddhartha Gautam was born in Nepal and taught
in both Nepal and India but Buddhism is still minority faith in
both countries which is also predicted to deteriorate by 5% in upcoming years.
Hence , to preserve the well defined and legitimate form of Buddhism practices
for an eternity we need to protect our cultural heritages like Chiva or chaitya
which will always reflect and show the importance of Buddhism to our younger
generations and their younger generations.
Like any big city, Kathmandu has seen rapid expansion in the last decade, but
despite the fast life of a metropolis, Kathmandu has been able to attract many
tourists retaining its ancient heritage like Chaityas which explains the major
role of Chiatyas in the tourism industry.
It is important to protect these heritages because they reflect our religion
and its teachings, traditions that are handed over from one generation to
another. It is a way we remember our older generation and show them respect.
