Restoration of Historic Yenga Hiti Begins in Kathmandu

Chiva Chaitya Organization (CCO) in cooperation with Yenga Club has begun the restoration of Yenga Hiti, one of Kathmandu’s significant and traditional stone spouts, under its ongoing two-year initiative for water heritage conservation. Works of Chiva Chaitya Organization (CCO) on Hiti restoration works is supported by the World Monuments Fund and the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, along with other international partners.

Located in the heart of the city, Yenga Hiti holds historical and cultural importance as a centuries-old water source that once served the surrounding community. Unlike many single-spout systems, Yenga Hiti features three-spout arrangement, a reflection of its former hydraulic richness and possibly its service to a large or symbolically significant population. Over time, the site had fallen into disrepair, and all three spouts had stopped flowing—disconnecting the local community from this vital and sacred source of water.

Through this restoration, CCO aims not only to conserve the architectural and physical elements of the Hiti, such as the stone structure, steps, and surrounding wall, but also to revive its original function. A key goal of the project is to restore the water flow in all three spouts, reconnecting the site with its underground water source. This functional revival is at the heart of CCO’s mission—to treat Hitis not just as monuments of the past, but as living systems that can serve and inspire present and future generations.

This initiative is the joint efforts with the Yenga Club. It has started with cooperation with the local community, the Yenga Club. CCO thanks for the support and cooperation from Yenga Club and it's officials, members of the Yenga community, Ward 21 chief and officials, Kathmandu Municipality and Department of Archaeology for
